The first major stage in bringing the Maingate Market Place from a conceptual idea to a real project has been completed. During its meeting on Friday, March 19,the Cleveland City Planning Commission approved the master plan developed by Maingate for the now vacant corner at East 55th Street and Woodland Avenue. The proposed plan is for the development of a 12-acre, mixed-use urban marketplace featuring fresh food and related retail, commercial, and entertainment activities.
A key component of the 100,000+ sq.ft. complex will be 20,000 sq.ft.of all-weather, year-round retail selling space for produce from some of the 40-plus food wholesalers in the area. Cleveland planning director Robert Brown who heads the department said, "The Maingate [MarketPlace] plan to expand on the produce business is consistent with the city's plan to build on existing assets." Although this step is early in the process of bringing the Market Place to reality, it is a crucial one that is garnering the support of the City and drawing interest from developers.
The Maingate MarketPlace caught the attention of local media and was in the March 22nd issue of Crain's Cleveland Business featuring a story on the project. Jay Miller, reporter from Crain's, met with Maingate staff for background and information about the plan. In the article, Mr. Miller conveys the need for available fresh, healthy food in the community and highlights benefits generated to the neighborhood and the region.
